The theme for this event is Citizen Science. We will be showcasing successful citizen science projects from around South West WA as well as hearing from a panel of local speakers explaining the current opportunities in and around Denmark.
Our panel of Denmark speakers are as follows:
Eungedup Wetlands- Shaun Ossinger- Wilson Inlet Catchment Committee
Cockies for Cockies Project- Tim Gamblin-Wilson Inlet Catchment Committee
Mt Hallowell BioBlitz- Holly Pepper- Denmark Environment Centre
Beach Nesting Birds Project- Lisa Nicholson- Birdlife Australia
Pre-prescribed Burn Surveys- Jeff Spencer- Denmark Bird Group
Friends of Mt Hallowell (Kooryunderup)- Steph Tchan
Some information about our other two speakers:
First we will be hearing from Dr Bronte Van Helden from UWA Albany and how the citizen scientists involved in the ‘Turning Gardeners into Conservationists’ project have uncovered new knowledge about the animals that visit gardens in southwestern Australia, and which wildlife-friendly gardening activities best support wildlife.
This will be followed by the Denmark Panel.
Then after morning tea we will be watching the very recently released film “Night Calling” introduced by Dr Boyd Wykes, on how Australia’s first owl friendly community came to be and how citizen science helped in making the Augusta Margaret River Region a safe haven for owls and other wildlife from Rodenticide poisoning.
